Our Blackstones — Yep, We Bought Two

A My Simply Sage Real-World Review

If you’ve never been able to enjoy the flavors of a griddle-cooked meal, in my opinion, you’re missing out on some really good eating.
About two years ago, I started thinking about getting a Blackstone griddle. It was the end of summer, they were on sale, and I figured—why not? I brought home a 28-inch, two-burner Blackstone. It took a little assembly and about three tools, as I recall.
It turned out to be one of the best things I ever did for outdoor cooking.

I Absolutely Love the Thing

I cook breakfast on it. I cook lunch on it. We’ve done complete dinners on it. You can cook just about anything you can think of—as long as it doesn’t involve a lot of liquid. It is a griddle, after all. Liquid has a tendency to run off!

We’ve made smashed tortilla burgers that can go Mexican, American, or just about any direction you want to take them. We’ve even made pizza on it.

Pizza on a griddle? Yep. It works. We’ve done it.

But one of my favorites is…..Breakfast!

Go outside in the morning, fire up the Blackstone, and start cooking bacon, hash browns and fried eggs in the fresh air. It almost feels like camping. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Well, What About Cleaning It?

Some people seem to think these things are difficult to clean. I haven’t found that at all.

When I’m finished cooking, I leave the griddle hot. A little spritz of water here and there loosens things up, and then I scrape the food residue toward the back. There’s a small foil-lined grease container back there that catches everything. Scrape it down, clean the cooking surface, and you’re pretty much done.

No big production.

Get Yourself Some Griddle Utensils

Do you absolutely need special utensils?

Probably not.

Would I recommend buying some?

Yep.

A couple of good griddle spatulas and a scraper make cooking and cleanup easier. If you’re going to use the griddle regularly, they’re worth having.

Apparently One Blackstone Wasn’t Enough

I liked my 28-inch Blackstone so much that I went out and bought another one. This time I bought a 22-inch, two-burner model for the RV.

Now when we’re camping and the front porch of the RV is set up and the awning is out, the little Blackstone gets set up outside too. It’s small enough to fit in the RV storage compartment, and I can cook outside while we’re camping.

Perfect.

A Word About Propane

Both of my Blackstones run on propane. My 28-inch model came set up for a regular larger propane bottle. The portable 22-inch model came with connections for those small disposable propane bottles you can buy at the store.

I changed the propane setup on my 22”.

I bought a hose setup so I could connect the smaller Blackstone to a regular propane bottle instead. Those little disposable bottles can empty in a hurry if you cook very much, and they’re getting pretty expensive to buy. A larger propane bottle costs a little more to get set up initially, but for me it was worth it.

And if you already own a propane barbecue, you may already have a bottle you can use or take along.

Some RVs also have an external propane outlet. Depending on your RV and griddle setup, that may allow you to connect the Blackstone with the appropriate longer hose and fittings. Make sure the hose, regulator and connections are designed for your particular propane system.

One Change I Made to My 28-Inch Blackstone

I bought a different hood for mine.

The original came with a lift-off cover, but I wanted a hood that stayed permanently attached. I like it better.

Besides being convenient, the hood helps block the breezes while cooking. It can also be lowered when appropriate to hold in heat, giving you something closer to an oven effect for certain foods.

The 28-inch model also sits on a movable cart, so I can roll it around the patio cooking area when needed.

The smaller 22-inch model is the traveler.
Home or RV—I’ve got a Blackstone ready to go.

My Simply Sage Verdict

👍 Big thumbs up.

After about two years of actually owning and cooking on Blackstones, I’d recommend one to just about anybody who enjoys outdoor cooking.

They’re easy to cook on.

They’re easy to clean.

They’re versatile.

And they’re just plain fun.

I bought the first one because it was on sale and I thought, Why not? I bought the second one because I already knew the answer.

I wanted my Blackstone with me when we went camping.

And so, if you like cooking outside like we do, get a Blackstone.

You’ll never regret it!
